Gongduk

Mongar, Bhutan

The Gongduk language of central Bhutan belongs to the oldest ethnolinguistic layer of the Kingdom of Bhutan, alongside Lhokpu and Black Mountain Mönpa. Gongduk belongs to the Trans-Himalayan language family, but beyond this, not much is known about the ethnolinguistic history of the language and its speakers. Gongduk is one of the two languages of Bhutan to exhibit a complex biactantial verb agreement system. The language is under heavy sociolinguistic pressure and critically endangered, being spoken by approximately 1000 people.
